Another child has undergone free plastic surgery in California to avoid being teased by peers. This is becoming more common and acceptable for parents to authorize and even seek assistance from surgeons and non-profits to protect their kids from bullying comments.

Kaleb Curtis-Stopnik, a 12-year-old resident of Huntington Beach, received free otoplasty surgery of the ears on Wednesday to avoid taunting remarks, such as being called “Dumbo,” “Big Ears” and “Satellite Ears” and he hopes this procedure will end it.

Kaleb Curtis-Stopnik said “I kinda felt like I was a nobody … the kid who sat in the corner.”

Now in middle school he remembers being teased since he was 3 years old, which is why he and his mother decided to do something about his ears that “stick out too much.”

Dr. Michael Niccole, a Newport Beach plastic surgeon, who has the Magic Mirror Foundation, helps kids and adults around the world for free, performed the ear pinning procedure to help pull Kaleb’s ears back closer to his head, without changing the unique shape of his ears.

“I’ve been doing humanitarian things in South America and Mexico for the last 25 years. So I know how it feels when the kid becomes recluse and hides or doesn’t want to go to school…or doesn’t even want to play with the other kids,” Niccole said.
